To Update or Not Update - That is the Question

Why You Should Update Your Phone and Apps — Even If Everything Seems Fine

We all know someone who says, “If it’s working fine, why mess with it?” Maybe you’ve said it yourself. I have a dear friend who proudly never updates her iPhone or any of her apps — and she thinks she’s doing the right thing.

But here’s the truth: not updating your phone or apps can cause more harm than good — and could even put your security at risk.

Let me explain why these updates matter and why I encourage all my SilverTech clients to stay up to date.

1. Updates Protect You from Scams and Hackers

Hackers are always looking for ways to sneak into your device — and when they find a weak spot, Apple and app developers release an update to fix it. If you skip the update, your phone stays unprotected, and that’s how scammers take advantage.

Think of it like locking your front door. An update is a stronger lock. Not updating is like leaving the door cracked open.

2. Updates Fix Problems You Might Not Notice Yet

Even if your phone seems to be working fine, small issues like slow performance, glitches, or freezing can build up over time. Updates are often full of bug fixes that make your phone run better, faster, and smoother.

3. Updates Give You New Features That Make Life Easier

Whether it’s better camera quality, easier ways to text, or simpler tools for organizing photos — updates often bring helpful improvements you’ll enjoy once you try them.

You don’t have to learn a bunch of new tricks. Most updates are small changes that actually make your phone easier to use.

4. Eventually, You Have to Update (Or Things Stop Working)

If you wait too long, certain apps — like your bank, your doctor’s portal, or even texting — may stop working on your older version. Then you’re forced to update all at once, which can be frustrating and confusing.

A little updating now saves a lot of trouble later.
